the library is the plan b, and that's okay

Eight handmade categories, no prompt needed: MindIsland's library as a calm fallback for days when you don't want to explain anything.

A small wooden shelf with three pastel cushions against a bare wall

Everyone talks about the prompt field on MindIsland. Type a sentence, get a session.

The library gets less attention. Which is a shame, because on some days it’s exactly the right thing. A short note on it.

what the library is

Alongside the personal sessions, MindIsland has a collection of ready-made meditations. It’s sorted into eight handmade categories. The ones named publicly include:

  • Breathe — for breathing exercises
  • Sleep — for the evening
  • Focus — for concentration
  • Anxiety Relief — for restless moments
  • Gratitude — for gratitude

The app screenshots also show Guided Meditation and Visualization. The rest falls under “and more”. According to the app, new sessions are added regularly.

Exactly how many meditations are in there isn’t public. So we’re not quoting a number.

why it’s lowkey good

No wording needed. Sometimes you don’t have the words for how you feel. A category like “Focus” or “Breathe” is easier than an empty field.

Handmade means curated. The categories are deliberately kept small. It’s not an endless list you scroll through for twenty minutes before you start. Less choice, less decision fatigue.

It covers the usual moments. Winding down in the evening, focusing before studying, a quick breather, a bit of gratitude at the end of an okay day. For a lot of everyday moments, that’s enough.

It complements the personal sessions. You can use the library as background noise and save the prompt field for the days when something specific is going on. That way you don’t have to put into words what’s on your mind every single day.

Favourites help. MindIsland saves ratings and favourites. If you like something, it’s easy to find again.

the catch

The library is small. If you want a huge collection, with thousands of meditations from lots of different teachers, this isn’t the place. Insight Timer is the one known for that, with a big free library from human teachers. Medito also offers plenty of free material.

It isn’t personal. A library session doesn’t know you’ve got a presentation tomorrow. The app’s real strength, the “problem first, then the calm” setup, doesn’t kick in here quite so directly.

It isn’t the reason for the subscription. Honestly: if you’re only after a library, there are free options. MindIsland is worth it more for the personal sessions. After the first free meditation, the app needs Premium. According to the App Store (US, as of October 2026), Premium Monthly costs $12.99.

No sleep stories. There’s a “Sleep” category. But we didn’t find sleep stories, sleep tracking or an alarm in the app. If that’s exactly what you’re after, take a look at Calm.

when the library is the better choice

A few situations where plan B is really plan A:

  1. You’re empty. No particular thought, just tiredness. Take “Breathe”.
  2. You want to concentrate, not process. Before a study session, “Focus” fits better than a prompt about exam nerves.
  3. You want to end the day well. “Gratitude” is a calm finish when everything was actually okay.
  4. You just want quiet before the night. “Sleep” without a specific topic in mind.

And if something specific does come up, you just switch to the prompt field.

combining library and prompt

A simple weekly rhythm, if you want to use both: on normal days you take a library session or the daily meditation. As soon as something specific is coming, an exam, a conversation, bad news, you switch to the prompt field. That way the personal part stays something special, and you don’t have to check in with yourself every morning just to get started.

who it’s for

For people who don’t want to check in with themselves every day. For people after a calm basic routine who only need something specific now and then. For beginners who want to get a feel for meditation first without having to type out their inner life straight away.

in short

The library isn’t the heart of MindIsland. It’s the quiet corner next to it. Eight categories, added to regularly, no prompt needed. For a lot of days, that’s exactly enough. More on the app at mindisland.app.

plan b is sometimes just the more relaxed plan.
