mindisland is a meditation app that listens first

One sentence in, a new session out: MindIsland addresses your problem first, then calms you down. What's good about it, and where the catch is.

A single lotus flower floating on still water against an empty background

Most meditation apps play everyone the same recording. Whether you’ve got exam nerves or a row with your landlord.

MindIsland does it differently. You type a sentence, and the app writes you a new session. A few notes on it.

what the app actually does

The idea is simple. Instead of a ready-made library to scroll through, there’s a small field. In it, roughly: what do you want to meditate on?

You write something like “seminar presentation tomorrow, head won’t switch off”. Then you pick a length, 3, 5 or 10 minutes, and a voice. Optionally you add a background sound underneath. A few seconds later, the session is ready.

The structure is always the same, and that’s the interesting part:

  1. The session picks up your problem and names it.
  2. It works through it and frames the stress a little more gently.
  3. Only then come breathing and silence.

Before that there’s a short breathing intro: four seconds in, brief pause, six seconds out. Every session starts this way.

why it’s lowkey good

It starts with you, not a script. Generic meditations often say “let go of all thoughts”. But when the thought is a deadline on Friday, that feels like someone talking past you. Here the thought is taken seriously first.

The lengths are realistic. Three minutes fits between two lectures. Ten minutes fits before bed. Nobody’s asking for half an hour.

Your posture doesn’t matter. The guidance adapts: chair, floor cross-legged, lying down or standing. Standing means, for example: on a packed train, hand on the rail, eyes open. For people who commute a lot, that’s a real point.

There’s a daily meditation. If you can’t be bothered to type, a fresh session is waiting every morning. No prompt, no thinking.

The extras are decent. Your last ten meditations are saved on the device, so they play offline too. There are streaks, favourites, ratings and a history. Alongside that, a small library with eight hand-made categories and an articles corner on mindset and philosophy.

Privacy isn’t an afterthought. The app advertises GDPR compliance. You can export your data or delete your account at any time.

the catch

Honestly, there are two.

First: the subscription. To start you get one free meditation. After that you need Premium. According to the App Store (US, as of October 2026), Premium Monthly costs $12.99 a month. We didn’t find a free trial in the store listings. Exactly how many personal sessions are included in the subscription isn’t publicly described. For busy months there are also credit packs. We couldn’t reliably verify a UK price in pounds, so check the store yourself before committing.

Second: they’re AI voices. The text is written by an AI model, and spoken via text-to-speech. There are several calm voices, “Luna” in the screenshot, for example. If you’re used to a particular human speaker, you’ll notice the difference. If you just want a calm voice talking about your own topic, probably not.

A small third point: as far as is publicly known, the meditations are in English. Not a problem for us, but good to know.

And one more important thing: MindIsland is meant for relaxing and reflecting. It’s not a medical device and not therapy. If you’re really struggling for a while, an app isn’t the right place — a chat with a professional is.

who it’s for

  • People who’ve tried generic meditations and thought: lovely, but not my problem.
  • Commuters who want to do three minutes standing up.
  • People who can’t switch off at night because one specific thought is going round in circles.
  • Beginners who want to start with “three minutes a day” without booking a course.

Probably not for you if you’re after a huge free library. Insight Timer or Medito are the more honest choice for that. And if you like Headspace or Calm for their courses or speakers, there’s no reason to give that up. MindIsland is a different approach, not automatically a better one.

in short

One sentence of context, a session that listens first and then calms you. Short, flexible, in any posture. The price is the part to think about, not the idea.
