after the scare: ten minutes to come down, no doomscrolling

A calm routine for after a horror session: headset off, lights on, water, leave the phone alone for a bit, then five minutes of meditation.

A cup of tea on a windowsill next to a VR headset that's been taken off

You’ve just come out of a horror session. Maybe HAUNTED: Are You Alone?, where arms come out of your bedroom wall. Your pulse is up, your head is wired, and your hand goes for the phone on autopilot.

Here’s a calm routine for the ten minutes after. No programme, no promises of healing. Just a sequence that’s easier than two hours of scrolling.

why this is even a thing

Mixed-reality horror happens in your actual room. That’s the appeal. But it also means: when you take the headset off, you’re standing in the same room where something was just knocking from the wall. The room doesn’t feel quite normal for a moment.

That’s not a drama. It’s just a transition you can shape on purpose. And the default route, straight onto your phone, is usually a bad fit for it. Feeds are built to keep you awake.

the routine: ten minutes

1. Headset off, close the game properly (1 minute). Not just taking it off and dumping it. Close the game, headset back in its place, controller next to it. A small, clear ending.

2. Lights on (immediately). Proper light, not just the fairy lights. Your room looks like your room again. The wall is a wall.

3. A glass of water (2 minutes). After a session where you’ve ducked, crawled and swung at things, it makes sense anyway. Drink slowly. Not as a side task, as the thing you’re doing.

4. Window open, stand there a moment (2 minutes). Fresh air, a few sounds from outside. A bus, a neighbour, some bird or other. The real world carries on as normal.

5. Phone: one job only (5 minutes). Here’s the trick. You pick up the phone, but not for the feed. You open a meditation app and do a short session. Then you put it back down.

why mindisland fits here

MindIsland is an app for short, AI-generated meditations. The approach suits exactly this kind of moment: you type one line about what’s on your mind, something like “still really wired after a horror game”. From that you get a meditation that picks up the theme first and then settles you down.

A few concrete details:

  • Length: 3, 5 or 10 minutes. For this routine, 5 minutes works well.
  • Posture: the app says any posture goes. Sitting on the bed, lying on the floor, doesn’t matter.
  • Opening: every session starts with the same breathing: four seconds in, short pause, six seconds out.
  • Voice and background: you pick a voice and optionally a background sound.

What it explicitly isn’t: therapy, or a cure for anxiety. It’s a relaxation exercise that fits the moment. If horror games leave you more than just wired, take that seriously and maybe just leave the horror alone.

the catch

  • MindIsland is a subscription. The first meditation is free, after that you need Premium. If you only want to come down now and then, you can do the routine without the app too: five minutes of breathing on the 4-pause-6 rhythm costs nothing.
  • The phone is still the phone. The moment after the meditation is the risky one. Notifications are waiting. Put it deliberately out of reach once the session ends.
  • Late is late. If you’re finishing at midnight, no routine helps against the time. Better not to schedule horror sessions right before bed.
  • Not for everyone. HAUNTED itself warns you at every start: not for people with anxiety disorders, heart conditions or epilepsy. That applies even if you meditate afterwards.

a bit about the game

In case you don’t know HAUNTED yet: it’s a mixed-reality horror game for Meta Quest, story runs about 25 to 35 minutes, PEGI 18, loud and physical. Exactly the kind of experience where a deliberate transition makes sense. £3.99 in the UK store, as of 10 Oct 2026: HAUNTED: Are You Alone?

who it’s for

Anyone who likes playing scary games but doesn’t want to scroll in bed for two hours afterwards. And anyone after a small routine that doesn’t feel like self-optimisation.
