lingfit vs duolingo, for people who've already cancelled the owl once
A fair feature comparison with no crowning a winner: what Duolingo does better, what LingFit does differently, and who the switch is actually worth it for.

You had a streak. Maybe 80 days, maybe 300. Then a stressful week came along, the streak was gone, and so was the app.
It happens to a lot of people. The question is what comes next. Here’s an honest comparison of Duolingo and LingFit. No winner, because there isn’t one. Just differences.
what they have in common
Both are phone apps with short lessons. Both lean on game elements: streaks, reminders, mascots, friends. With Duolingo it’s the owl, with LingFit it’s a fox called Fitty Fox.
Both have a structured learning path you work through lesson by lesson. And both want you coming back every day.
So if you don’t like gamification full stop, neither of them will make you happy.
what duolingo does better
Fair’s fair.
More languages. Duolingo offers a lot more languages, including Japanese, Korean, Chinese and plenty of others. LingFit has 13 in total. If you want to learn a language from outside Europe, you’re better off with Duolingo.
A free version. Duolingo can basically be used for free, with a paid subscription for extras. LingFit has no free tier, only a 7-day trial on the annual plan.
Size and name recognition. Duolingo has been established for years. There are huge communities, guides and forums around it. That’s genuinely worth something when you’ve got questions.
what lingfit does differently
You decide the material. This is the biggest difference. In LingFit you type in a topic or bring up to 20 words of your own, including by photo of a list or a page of a book. An AI builds a whole chapter of exercises out of it. So instead of “the owl drinks milk”, you get the words you need for your job, your hobby or your move abroad.
A feed with real videos. LingFit has a vertical feed of real YouTube videos in your target language, sorted by level. Tap a word in the subtitles, the video pauses, save the word. Speed at 0.75× or 0.5×.
Every word is open. Anywhere in the app, a window shows several translations, the base form with article, audio at slow speed too, an AI explanation and a bookmark.
A tone that adapts to your age. During setup you give your age group. Under 35 it stays cheeky, from 35 it calms down. If you’ve ever caught yourself feeling guilty about push notifications, you’ll notice the difference.
Native courses for non-English speakers. German, French and Spanish speakers learn in their own language. A bit of a footnote for UK readers, but good to know if your flatmate from Lyon wants to learn along with you.
Grammar explained separately. Grammar classes with one rule per class and a matching practice chapter afterwards.

the catch with lingfit
No free mode. If you just want a quick look, you have to start the trial and remember to cancel in time. At least the app reminds you three days before it ends.
Prices differ by store. On 10 Oct 2026 the annual plan cost $44.99 in the US App Store and €49.99 in the German one. We don’t know the pound prices.
Your own packs cost extra credits. One is free, the rest are bought and don’t expire.
And the course stops at B2.
who the switch is worth it for
If you cancelled Duolingo because the sentences felt too arbitrary, LingFit is worth a try. If you cancelled because daily streaks stress you out full stop, it won’t be fundamentally different here. What helps more is setting yourself a low streak goal, which LingFit lets you do during setup.
And if you want to learn Japanese: stay with the owl. Honestly.
