the 24-tile test: does tank avenger fit in your box room?

At least 24 lit-up tiles, a clear 0.6 × 0.6 m patch, one continuous area. Here's how to check your room before you buy.

A narrow bed and a clear patch of wooden floor in a small room

Box rooms are small. Bed, desk, wardrobe, and a strip of floor in between that usually has a bag on it.

So the question before you buy isn’t whether Tank Avenger is good. It’s whether it’ll fit on your floor at all. Luckily, the game tells you pretty precisely what it needs.

what the game actually asks for

After the room scan, Tank Avenger shows your floor as a grid of 25 cm tiles. At the start, every tile is lit up. You aim the controller at the floor, hold the trigger, and switch off the tiles that shouldn’t be part of the play area.

To carry on, two conditions have to be met:

  1. At least 24 lit tiles. That’s 1.5 m².
  2. A clear rectangle of at least 0.6 × 0.6 m within that area.

Until that’s sorted, the CONTINUE button stays grey. The game also tells you what’s missing: how many tiles you still need, or that the clear patch is too small.

Then there’s a third rule that’s easy to miss: the area has to be continuous. If you draw a line that creates two islands, the smaller one goes out. So a patch in front of the bed plus a patch in front of the wardrobe, split by the desk chair, doesn’t count as one area.

furniture doesn’t count

Tiles under furniture show up red and stay locked. Nothing gets built on furniture. The battle only happens on the floor.

Important: furniture isn’t an obstacle in-game. Tanks and shells only bump into the walls of the play area. So your bed isn’t cover, it’s just a zone where nothing happens.

the test, in five minutes

No headset, just a tape measure:

  • Step 1: Measure the biggest clear bit of floor with nothing standing or lying on it. Carpet is fine.
  • Step 2: Roughly count it in 25 cm squares. An area of 1.0 × 1.5 m gives you 4 × 6 = 24 tiles. Exactly the minimum.
  • Step 3: Check whether a 60 × 60 cm square somewhere inside it is completely clear.
  • Step 4: Check whether you can walk around the area. You steer the tank while you move, and you’re looking down while you do it.

If steps 2 and 3 just about work, the game runs. If step 4 doesn’t work, it gets uncomfortable.

honestly: when it gets tight

The studio recommends around 2 × 2 m of clear floor in its FAQ. That’s a fair bit more than the minimum, and the difference is noticeable.

The game puts the main fortress on the largest clear rectangle and spreads outposts across the rest. If an outpost doesn’t fit, its tank starts somewhere else so the enemy count stays the same. On a small area that means: everything’s closer together, fights are denser, you’ve got less room to dodge.

It’s playable. It’s just more frantic.

And there’s the safety side. Every time you start, the game shows five rules, including “nothing on the floor” and “keep your distance from furniture”. In a very small room you’re always close to the edge of the bed and the desk. Move slowly, don’t walk backwards blind.

the catch

The minimum is a minimum, not a comfort setting. With 1.5 m² Tank Avenger runs, but it isn’t the version it was built for.

Also, the game only saves one play area. If you play in the living room at some point, that overwrites your selection in your own room, and you’ll be drawing it again next time. For a fresh room scan, the + NEW SCAN button helps — it opens the headset’s Space Setup directly.

plan b: the shared living room, or VR

Two honest alternatives if your room isn’t enough:

  • The house living room or hallway. When the others are out and the floor’s clear. The “nobody else in the play area” rule matters even more then.
  • VR mode. Here you play on a fixed 3.5 × 3.5 m field in a virtual world, regardless of your floor. Your real walls appear as a grid when you get close to them. Drones and the nuke aren’t in VR. And even in VR you should only move as far as your real room allows.

who it’s for

For anyone living in a small room who wants to know before buying whether it’ll be enough. If you can put together four by six tiles, it’s enough. If you can manage eight by eight, it’s more fun.
